This is not about food at all
I want to share something I learned in my clinic
In twenty two years I have seen more than fifty five thousand clients
And most of them dont come for diet
They come because they are tired of fighting with food
Last month a client came
Her name is Pooja she is thirty four works in a bank in Delhi
Two kids at home
She told me ma’am I eat clean whole day
But after ten pm when everyone sleeps I finish full packet of chips and ice cream
I know it is wrong but I cant stop
I cry after eating
I told her Pooja this is not hunger
Your stomach is full but your heart is empty
You are not greedy you are just exhausted
She started crying because no one told her this before
Real hunger vs emotional hunger how to know
Real hunger is body signal
It comes slowly
Stomach feels empty
You can eat roti sabzi dal and you feel satisfied
You can wait for thirty minutes
Emotional hunger is brain signal
It comes suddenly like a wave
At night after a fight or after long office day
You dont want dal chawal
You want only something crunchy sweet or creamy
Chocolate pastry cold drink
You eat very fast standing in kitchen only
And after eating you feel guilty not full
If you feel guilty after eating it is emotional eating
If you feel peaceful after eating it is real hunger
Why this happens to working women more
Pooja wakes at five am makes tiffin for kids husband
Office whole day no lunch properly
Only chai and biscuit
Comes home at seven pm makes dinner does homework with kids
By ten pm she is mentally done
No time for herself whole day
So brain says give me some happiness now
And food is the fastest happiness available at ten pm
Same happens with many of my clients in Model Town and even those working in Gurgaon
They skip meals in day and punish themselves at night
Also when we sleep less than six hours our body craves sugar more
Pooja was sleeping at twelve thirty am scrolling phone
So emotional eating is not lack of control
It is lack of rest and care for yourself
What worked for Pooja I did not give her any diet
First I told her stop skipping lunch
If you eat only chai in lunch your body will take revenge at night
So she started carrying one box rajma chawal and curd to bank
Proper lunch
Only this one change reduced her night craving by half
Second I gave her a small rule
Before eating anything at night she will do three things
Drink one glass water
Brush her teeth
And call it craving pause
She has to wait fifteen minutes
She can walk in balcony or talk to her sister
After fifteen minutes if she still wants it she can eat half portion only
In most days craving went away in those fifteen minutes
Third I told her to remove trigger from house
She used to keep big family pack chips for kids
I said dont keep it on kitchen counter
Keep it locked or dont buy for one month
If it is not in front of eyes you wont eat at ten pm
She started keeping roasted makhana and chana in a dabba instead
Same crunch but no guilt
Fourth I gave her a night diary
Not food diary but mood diary
Every night she writes one line
Today I am tired or today I fought with boss or today kids made me angry
When she started seeing pattern she understood she eats when she is tired not hungry
Fifth we fixed her sleep
No phone after eleven pm
Warm haldi milk at ten thirty pm
Lights off by eleven fifteen pm
Good sleep reduces next day sugar craving automatically
After twenty days Pooja messaged me ma’am I did not eat ice cream this whole week
First time in two years
She was so happy
What to keep in kitchen if you get night cravings
Dont keep chips cold drink pastry in house for next thirty days
This is most important
Keep roasted chana makhana peanuts
One handful is enough and gives protein
Keep curd buttermilk
Good for gut and keeps mood calm
Keep fruits like apple banana
If you want sweet eat fruit first
Keep dark chocolate only one small piece not full bar
Sometimes one piece is enough to close craving
And always keep water bottle near bed
Many times we are just thirsty at night
A routine that saved many of my clients
Morning after waking water and five soaked almonds
Eight am breakfast must not skip
Two besan chilla with curd or poha with peanuts
One pm proper lunch not just chai
Dal chawal sabzi curd
Five pm most important snack time
If you eat good at five pm you wont binge at ten pm
Chai plus handful chana or one fruit
Eight pm light dinner khichdi or two roti with light sabzi
Ten thirty pm haldi milk and no phone
Sleep by eleven pm
This simple routine I have given in Apollo Hospitals also and it works
Mistakes that make it worse
Eating very less in day to lose weight fast
Then you will overeat at night for sure
Eating while watching TV or phone
You eat double without knowing
Keeping sweets on dining table for guests
You will finish it when stressed
Saying I will start from Monday
Start from tonight only small step
Feeling guilty after eating
Guilt makes you eat more next day
Just note it and move on
My final advice as a dietitian
You are not a bad person if you eat emotionally
You are just a tired person who needs rest and care
Dont punish yourself
Dont do very strict diet
Start with one small habit
Like proper lunch or sleep at eleven pm
If you control four nights out of seven it is still a big win
Slowly it becomes five then six
If you need support
I have been working for twenty two plus years now
If you feel you eat when stressed or lonely or tired book a free call with me
We will talk about your triggers not just your weight
We will make a plan that fits your office and home life
No starvation no shame only peace with food
